Anticipated Adaptations of 2025
'The Housemaid' by Frieda McFadden
A psychological thriller starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, "The Housemaid" is director Paul Feig's latest feature adaptation of Frieda McFadden's 2022 bestselling novel of the same name.
The story follows a struggling woman who finds work as a maid (played by Sweeney) for a wealthy couple (portrayed by Seyfried opposite Brandon Sklenar), only to discover that her employers harbor dark secrets. The film is slated for release this coming Christmas, on December 25, 2025.
'Regretting You' by Colleen Hoover
Just one year after the release of "It Ends with Us," another of Colleen Hoover's bestselling novels is getting an onscreen adaptation — her 2019 romance novel "Regretting You." The film, directed by Josh Boone, will star Mckenna Grace, Allison Williams, Dave Franco, and Mason Thames.
The story centers around a complicated relationship between Morgan (played by Williams) and her daughter Clara (Grace). The relationship faces a deeper strain when Clara's father, Morgan's husband, dies in a tragic accident. "Regretting You" comes out on October 24, 2025.
'Wicked: For Good' by Gregory Maguire
Based loosely on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, Ariana Grande's Glinda and Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba return in "Wicked: For Good." The actresses and vocal powerhouses starred in the first film, "Wicked," which was released on Thanksgiving 2024.
"Wicked: For Good" picks up after the events of "Wicked," centering on Glinda and Elphaba's evolving relationship, as Elphaba later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. The film hits theaters on November 21, 2025.
'Frankenstein' by Mary Shelley
Another retelling of the centuries-old story, Guillermo Del Toro reimagines Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" in an adaptation set to hit screens on November 7, 2025. Starring Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Oscar Isaac, the film follows scientist Victor Frankenstein as he pieces together and brings to life a monster.
Looking Ahead to 2026
'The Bride!'
Another adaptation of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," "The Bride!" seems to act as an extension of the original story. Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, the movie follows a lonely Frankenstein in 1930s Chicago, who finds Dr. Euphronius and asks the scientist to create a companion for him.
In true Frankenstein tradition, the pair reanimate a murdered young woman and an explosive romance ensues. "The Bride!" stars Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley and is slated for release in March 2026.
'Project Hail Mary' by Andy Weir
Directed by Phil Lord, "Project Hail Mary" is sourced from the 2021 high-stakes sci-fi novel of the same name by Andy Weir. The film centers around Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling), an astronaut who wakes up alone in a space station with no memory of who he is or how he got there.
Fragments of his memory return, he realizes he's on a mission to stop a cosmic event that has already triggered the early stages of a new ice age on Earth. "Project Hail Mary" is scheduled for release in March 2026.
Other adaptations to look forward to in the coming year include Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" (2026), Colleen Hoover's "Verity" and "Reminders of Him" (2026), and Emily Henry's "People We Meet on Vacation."
And that wraps up our list of upcoming book-to-screen adaptations! Whether you’re a devoted reader or a movie lover looking for your next obsession, these stories promise plenty of drama, heart, and imagination. Get ready to see your favorite characters leap off the page and onto the big screen.
