Her father was absent, and her mother's beauty made her feel self-conscious and embarrassed. She was nicknamed "Sofia Stuzzicadenti," which translates to "Sofia Toothpick." She said:

"I was really shy. My father was absent, and my mother was too blonde, tall, lively, and above all, unmarried. Her eccentric, excessive beauty embarrassed me."

Despite her difficult upbringing, Loren's beauty and talent shone through, and she became a successful actress with the help of film producer Carlo Ponti, who also became her husband.

Ponti helped the actress with her Hollywood career, working as her manager. The couple met when she was 16, and he groomed her to become a star in Italy before she turned 25.

The couple's love story was not without challenges, as Ponti was still married to Giuliana Fiastri, a general's daughter, when they started seeing each other.

However, they maintained their professional and personal relationship and became one of Hollywood's most famous couples. Loren recalled:

"It was love at first sight for both of us. [...]the most important thing was that this was how we started to see each other, at first in a friendly way, then it became serious when I was 19."

After years of struggling to start a family, Sophia Loren's dream of having a legitimate family came true when Ponti finally obtained an annulment from his previous marriage to Fiastri in 1962.

The couple tied the knot four years later in a civil wedding in Sevres, France, and were overjoyed when they welcomed their first child, Carlo Ponti Jr, on December 29, 1968, in Geneva, Switzerland, after years of trying and four miscarriages.
