A Woman's Husband Called Her a 'Buzzkill' for Not Laughing When He Teased Her Appearance at Her Birthday Party – The Next Morning, He Found What She'd Left for Him on Their Kitchen Table and Shouted, 'What Have You Done?!'

My husband had always been quick with a joke, especially when someone else was the punchline. But after what happened at my birthday dinner, I decided it was time to see if he could handle being on the receiving end.

"What have you done?!"

My husband's voice echoed through the house.

I was upstairs getting dressed when Tyler discovered what I'd left on our kitchen table.

"Emily! Get down here!"

I took my time.

"What have you done?!"

When I entered the kitchen, Tyler was holding the offending item in his hands.

He looked like he'd just received an unexpected tax bill!

"Explain this," he demanded.

I glanced at him.

"Which part?"

"All of it!"

"Explain this."

"Well, it's cotton. I think the washing instructions are inside..."

"Emily!"

I took a sip of coffee.

He pointed at the item.

"Why would you make something like this?"

"Because I thought it was funny."

"Why would you make something like this?"

"You're deliberately embarrassing me!"

I raised an eyebrow.

"Interesting. I thought you loved jokes."

My husband stared at me.

Then, his phone rang.

It was his mother.

"I thought you loved jokes."

He answered, listened for a moment, and suddenly shouted, "Mom, you can't seriously be involved in this!"

I covered my mouth.

Whatever my mother-in-law (MIL), Diane, said next wiped the anger off his face. Then, Tyler looked at me.

"You ordered SIX?"

I nearly choked on my coffee.

To understand why my MIL suddenly got involved in my scandal, I need to explain what happened the night before.

"You can't seriously be involved in this!"

***

I'd just turned 38.

For weeks, I'd been looking forward to celebrating my birthday. I'd planned the party meticulously because I wanted it to be special.

I booked a nice restaurant and invited everyone: co-workers, childhood friends, relatives, and friends Tyler and I had known for years.

I'd put on weight over the past year.

I wanted it to be special.

A lot had been going on in the family: My father had undergone surgery, and Tyler's mother had needed help after her knee replacement. Plus, work had been exhausting.

So taking care of myself hadn't exactly been my priority.

I'd become insecure about my appearance, especially in photos.

Tyler knew how hard I'd been on myself about it.

My father had undergone surgery.

I'd told him several times that I missed feeling confident in my clothes.

My husband usually said I worried too much.

Unfortunately, my husband also believed he was the funniest man alive, even at someone else's expense.

At family dinners, he made jokes about his brother's salary, his mother's cooking, and his friends' marriages.

If anyone complained, he'd call them sensitive.

I worried too much.

I'd spent 11 years watching Tyler turn awkward situations into opportunities for another punch line.

Still, I never imagined he'd use my birthday to humiliate me.

***

The evening started wonderfully.

My sister Lauren brought flowers.

My best friend Rachel hugged me and told me I looked beautiful.

The evening started wonderfully.

***

Everyone was chatting, and things were going great when the restaurant staff brought out my cake.

Then, Tyler stood up.

"Everybody! I've got something to say!"

My stomach tightened.

He raised his glass.

"Look at my wife! She keeps saying she wants to get back in shape, but apparently the cake has other plans for her!"

My stomach tightened.

A few people laughed awkwardly.

I tried to smile.

But Tyler wasn't finished.

"Seriously, sometimes I look at our wedding pictures and wonder where that woman went. If any of you find her, tell her I miss her!"

My face burned.

But Tyler wasn't finished.

"Tyler, please stop. You're embarrassing me," I whispered.

He knew how insecure I'd been feeling, yet he was humiliating me in front of everyone.

My husband rolled his eyes.

"Oh, come on! Don't be such a buzzkill! Can't you let people have fun?"

Then, he told everyone that his wife couldn't take a joke!

"You're embarrassing me."

People looked uncomfortable, but nobody spoke up.

I fought back tears.

I'd spent weeks planning that dinner, and my husband had turned my biggest insecurity into entertainment.

I finished the evening smiling because I didn't want to make things worse.

But I barely spoke during the drive home.

I fought back tears.

***

"Are you still upset?" Tyler asked while driving.

"You embarrassed me."

"It was a joke!"

"It wasn't funny."

"People laughed."

"Because they were uncomfortable!"

He sighed.

"It wasn't funny."

"Emily, you've changed. You used to laugh at everything."

I looked at him.

"Maybe you used to be funnier."

He frowned.

"See? That's exactly what I'm talking about."

"Emily, you've changed."

***

At home, Tyler went straight to bed without apologizing.

I stayed downstairs because I couldn't sleep. I kept replaying everything he'd said.

Around 11 p.m., Rachel texted.

"Are you okay?"

I typed, "I'm fine."

She replied, "I watched you try not to cry. Please don't pretend."

I called her.

"Are you okay?"

She apologized for not defending me at dinner.

"You didn't embarrass me," I told her. "Tyler did."

"I know. But someone should've stopped him."

***

After we hung up, I called Lauren.

My sister answered immediately.

"Someone should've stopped him."

"If you're asking whether your husband was an idiot tonight, yes," she said.

Despite everything, I laughed.

"I've got an idea that's right up your alley," I replied.

"What kind of idea?"

"Nothing illegal."

"That doesn't reassure me."

I laughed.

"What kind of idea?"

***

Now, the day after my birthday, Tyler stood in our kitchen, glaring at me while speaking to his mother.

"Mom, why would you buy these?!"

I couldn't hear Diane's voice through the phone, but Tyler frowned.

"Because I'm your son!"

Another pause.

"You're actually going to wear it?!"

He looked horrified.

"Because I'm your son!"

***

You see, Lauren owns a small printing business. She makes shirts, mugs, and personalized gifts.

She's always had a strange sense of humor.

Once, she'd printed a mug for her ex-boyfriend that said, "World's Second-Best Boyfriend."

When he asked who was first, she replied, "My next one."

Their relationship ended shortly afterward.

She's always had a strange sense of humor.

When I spoke to her the night before, Lauren said, "Tell me exactly what Tyler called you."

"A buzzkill."

"Perfect."

Ten minutes later, she sent me a design.

I stared at my phone.

Then, I burst out laughing!

She sent me a design.

The design showed a cartoon birthday cake wearing sunglasses.

Above it were the words:

"APPARENTLY, I'M A BUZZKILL."

Below the cake were the words:

"BUT AT LEAST I'M NOT A JERK."

I laughed until my stomach hurt!

The design showed a cartoon birthday cake.

"Lauren, you're ridiculous!"

"Thank you. I'll put that on my business cards."

I asked her to make me one.

She offered to print it that night.

Then, she asked whether she could show Rachel.

I agreed.

I asked her to make me one.

Rachel wanted one immediately!

Then Melissa, another friend who'd attended dinner, asked for one.

My cousin Jenna joined in.

Nobody posted anything publicly. Lauren simply shared the design with a small group of women who knew what had happened.

Within an hour, 12 people wanted shirts!

I couldn't believe it!

Rachel wanted one!

Then, Lauren called again.

"Emily, you're going to love this!"

"What now?"

"Guess who ordered six?!"

I had no idea.

"Tyler's mother!"

I sat upright and stared at the ceiling.

"Guess who ordered six?!"

Lauren continued.

"She wants one for herself, one for her sister, and four for her friends!"

Then she forwarded Diane's message.

"Tell Emily I'm sorry about what happened. Also, please make mine a large one. I like room for dessert."

I laughed so loudly that Tyler stirred upstairs!

For the first time since dinner, I felt better.

She forwarded Diane's message.

Lauren finished printing a small batch overnight and delivered 20 shirts the next morning.

I brought them inside before Tyler woke up.

Then, I left one on the kitchen table with a note:

"Since you said I couldn't take a joke, I decided to make one myself. Apparently, other people think it's funny too."

I went upstairs to get dressed.

I brought them inside.

***

When my husband finally came downstairs, I heard him stop in the kitchen.

A moment later, his voice echoed through the house as he screamed, holding up a bright pink T-shirt.

***

Now, Tyler handed me the phone.

"Mom wants you."

I answered and put the call on speakerphone.

"Hi, Diane."

His voice echoed.

"Emily, sweetheart, I'm so sorry about last night."

"You don't need to apologize."

"I know. My son does."

Tyler stared at the ceiling.

Diane continued.

"I watched your face when he made those jokes. I should've told him to stop."

"I'm so sorry."

"And frankly, I've gained weight since my wedding too. If Tyler wants to search for people who look different now, he can start with his own hairline."

I nearly dropped the phone!

Tyler narrowed his eyes.

"What did you say?"

I waved him away.

I nearly dropped the phone!

Then, my MIL added, "Tell Lauren I want my shirts before Sunday's barbecue."

My smile faded.

"Sunday's barbecue?"

"Didn't Tyler remind you?"

He hadn't.

Every summer, Diane hosted a family barbecue.

"Didn't Tyler remind you?"

And suddenly, I understood why Tyler was so upset!

He knew his mother.

She wasn't buying those shirts to leave them in a drawer!

***

For the next few days, my husband acted as though I'd started an international incident.

He knew his mother.

"You're really letting everyone wear those things?"

"I'm not in charge of what adults wear."

"You could ask them not to."

"Why?"

"Because it's embarrassing!"

I looked at him.

"Now, you know how that feels."

"I'm not in charge."

He sighed.

"I already apologized!"

"You didn't, Tyler."

"What do you want me to say?"

"That you knew I was insecure about my weight, and you made fun of me anyway."

He looked uncomfortable.

"I already apologized!"

"I didn't think people would take it seriously."

"I took it seriously. Shouldn't that matter?"

He had no answer.

For once, I didn't rush to fill the silence.

"I took it seriously."

***

On Friday afternoon, Lauren called.

"Don't panic."

That only made me do the opposite.

"What happened?"

"Some customers saw your shirt design."

"And?"

"They want to buy it."

I blinked.

"Don't panic."

"Why?"

"Apparently, lots of women have been called buzzkills for refusing to laugh at stupid jokes."

My sister explained that she'd displayed one sample in her shop.

A customer asked about it.

Lauren hadn't mentioned my name or my marriage. She'd only explained that the slogan came from a bad joke between a couple.

A customer asked about it.

By closing time, several customers had requested shirts.

"Emily, I won't sell them unless you're comfortable," she said.

I considered it.

The shirt wasn't really about Tyler anymore.

It was about refusing to smile while someone treated you badly.

I considered it.

"Go ahead," I said. "Just keep my personal story private."

"Deal!"

Lauren offered me a small share of the profits for helping with the design.

I wasn't expecting much.

But by the weekend, she'd sold more shirts than she'd anticipated!

"Go ahead."

Tyler found out when Lauren called to discuss another print run.

"You're making money from humiliating me?!"

I folded my arms.

"Funny. I thought you said people should learn to take a joke."

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

I was starting to enjoy those moments.

I folded my arms.

***

Sunday arrived.

I nearly stayed home from Diane's barbecue.

Not because I was ashamed, but because I didn't want another family gathering to become uncomfortable.

But Rachel convinced me otherwise.

"Emily, you didn't ruin anything. Why should you hide?"

She was right.

So I went.

I nearly stayed home.

When we arrived, my MIL was standing beside the grill.

She wore a bright pink T-shirt. So did her sister Carol.

And Carol's best friend, Patricia, was wearing one too.

I stopped walking.

Tyler froze beside me.

Diane smiled when she saw us.

She wore a bright pink T-shirt.

"Emily! Look what arrived!"

I covered my face.

"Oh, my goodness."

Then, my MIL turned around.

On the back, Lauren had printed another message.

"CAKE IS NOT THE ENEMY."

I burst out laughing!

"Oh, my goodness."

Tyler looked like he wanted to disappear.

"Mom," he whispered.

"What?"

"Seriously?"

She glanced at her shirt.

"Oh, don't be such a buzzkill, sweetheart!"

Carol nearly dropped her plate!

She glanced at her shirt.

Patricia laughed so hard she had to sit down!

I was still laughing when Diane hugged me.

"Happy belated birthday, sweetheart!"

"Thank you!"

Then she whispered, "I love my son, but somebody had to teach him when to stop talking."

I smiled.

I was still laughing.

Across the yard, my husband had quietly joined his father, Frank, at the grill.

For once, he wasn't trying to entertain everyone.

***

Later that afternoon, I found Tyler sitting alone on the back steps.

I sat beside him.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, "I hated seeing everyone laugh at me."

He rubbed his hands together.

"I kept thinking they were treating me like an idiot. Then I remembered your face at dinner."

He looked at me.

He rubbed his hands together.

"I knew you were upset. You asked me to stop. But I kept going because people were watching."

For the first time, my husband wasn't defending himself.

"I'm sorry, Emily. I knew how you felt about your weight, and I used it to get a laugh. You didn't deserve that."

My throat tightened.

"Thank you."

"I knew you were upset."

Then he gave a small smile.

"Although I think my mother's enjoying this too much."

I laughed.

"She ordered six shirts."

"Seven."

I turned toward him.

"What?"

He looked embarrassed.

He gave a small smile.

"She ordered another one yesterday."

"For whom?"

My husband sighed before muttering, "Me."

I stared at him.

Then I burst out laughing.

I stared at him.

"She's making me wear it to her birthday dinner."

This time, he laughed too.

Not at my appearance.

At himself, and it felt different.

***

A week later, Lauren called with an update.

She'd sold enough shirts to make a nice profit.

Not at my appearance.

My sister transferred my share.

I booked myself a spa afternoon.

Then, I bought a new dress.

Not because I wanted to look thinner, but because I liked it.

When Tyler saw me wearing it, he smiled.

"You look beautiful."

For once, there wasn't a joke coming.

I bought a new dress.

He hesitated.

"Could I take you out for a proper birthday dinner? Just us?"

I was surprised, but I considered it.

"Only if you promise not to give a speech."

"Not one word."

"And no jokes about my weight."

"Never again."

I was surprised.

***

We went out that Friday.

Tyler brought flowers, listened when I spoke, and didn't comment when I ordered dessert.

I wasn't expecting perfection. I wanted respect.

And for the first time in a while, I felt understood.

I wanted respect.

***

When we got home, a package from Diane was waiting on our porch.

Inside was another pink T-shirt.

Tyler unfolded it.

Across the front were the words:

"MY WIFE SURVIVED THE BUZZKILL INCIDENT I CAUSED."

Tyler unfolded it.

My husband stared at it.

Then he looked at me.

"My mother is never going to let this go, is she?"

I grinned.

"Not a chance."

He put on the shirt.

My husband stared.

I took a picture, and with his permission, sent it to Diane.

My MIL replied almost immediately.

"FINALLY! A JOKE WORTH LAUGHING AT!"

Tyler read the message and started laughing.

I laughed with him.

I took a picture.

My birthday hadn't gone how I'd hoped. But I learned something important.

I didn't need to change my body to deserve kindness.

And Tyler learned that being funny wasn't about doing it at someone else's expense.

Sometimes, the best joke was the one that reminded you to treat people better.

Especially those you love.
