Woman Went to Pick up Her Daughter's Wedding Cake – The Baker Saw Her Name and Said, 'I Was Told Not to Give It to You'
October 06, 2026

I borrowed my twin sister's identity for a harmless joke and ended up in the middle of a relationship scandal. I thought clearing her name would be simple. I couldn't have been more wrong.
My twin sister Zoe and I had confused people since kindergarten.
Once, at sixteen, we even switched places during a driving lesson. Our instructor never noticed.
But we couldn't have been more different.
"You made a spreadsheet to buy a couch?" Zoe asked.
Zoe and I had confused people.
"Three spreadsheets."
"Sarah, just pick one!"
"E-easy for you to say."
Zoe sighed. "You worry too much."
"And you don't worry enough."
We couldn't have been more different.
Zoe had always been confident. I was the opposite.
Whenever I got nervous – which happened a lot because I constantly doubted myself – I started stuttering.
"Sarah doesn't want to go to that party," she'd tell our mother.
She meant well.
But at twenty-seven, I was still letting my sister speak for me.
I was the opposite.
We were close, although our jobs had made spontaneous afternoons together increasingly rare.
Then one Saturday, Zoe called laughing. "Sarah, I have the stupidest idea."
"That's usually how your best ideas start."
"Remember when we switched places?"
"Details. Want to help me prank my friends?"
I was still letting my sister speak for me.
"My friends have never met you," Zoe said. "Just dress like me and show up at our Saturday lunch."
"And pretend I'm you?"
"Exactly! I'll join you in an hour later."
I shook my head. "You're unbelievable."
"Imagine their faces!" she squealed.
I have the stupidest idea.
"Are you sure nobody knows about me?"
"They know I have a sister. They just don't know we're identical."
"That's a pretty important detail."
"Exactly! Come on, Sarah. When did we last do something ridiculous together?"
"I don't know. I've had enough excitement from dating lately."
Imagine their faces!
Zoe laughed. "Oh, come on. One disappointing guy doesn't mean you have to become a hermit."
"Two disappointing guys."
"Even better reason to have some fun!"
I laughed. "Fine. But you're buying dessert."
"Deal!"
I was worried Zoe's friends would figure out I wasn't her. It never occurred to me that one of them might have a reason to hate her.
They just don't know we're identical.
Zoe lent me her green sweater, black jeans, and favorite earrings.
"At least you're not stealing my beige coat again," she teased.
"I borrowed it once!"
"And my handbag."
"I gave them back!"
She laughed and helped me copy her hairstyle.
One of them might have a reason to hate her.
***
Fifteen minutes later, I arrived at the restaurant.
Three women were waiting.
"Zoe! Finally!" Madison waved.
Another woman hugged me.
"Love your sweater!"
"Thanks," I said, trying not to laugh.
I arrived at the restaurant.
Bethany barely spoke.
"Everything okay?" I asked.
She forced a smile. "Perfect."
Madison glanced at her. "You sure?"
"Let's just eat."
Bethany barely spoke.
Then Madison asked, "Still planning that weekend trip?"
"Maybe."
"You were so excited!"
"Plans change."
I checked the entrance. No Zoe.
Let's just eat.
Another thirty minutes passed before Bethany leaned toward me.
"Come outside. We need to talk."
Her expression made my stomach tighten.
I followed her into the hallway.
The moment we were alone, she crossed her arms.
"I didn't think you'd have the nerve to show up here."
No Zoe.
I blinked. "What?"
"Seriously, Zoe?"
"I don't understand."
"Don't insult my intelligence."
She pulled out her phone. "After what you did, you really thought I wouldn't find out?"
I didn't think you'd have the nerve to show up here.
She turned the screen toward me.
I caught a glimpse of a man standing beside a woman in a coat. His face was turned away.
Before I could look closer, Bethany snatched the phone back. "Well?"
"What am I supposed to…"
"That's my boyfriend!"
Don't insult my intelligence.
My mouth went dry. "Your boyfriend?"
"My boyfriend! You know perfectly well who he is!"
I stared at her.
Bethany's eyes filled with tears. "We had one terrible argument. One! He said he needed space, and suddenly you're sneaking around with him?"
"I d-don't…"
His face was turned away.
"You stole my boyfriend!"
"Bethany, please…"
"And now you're sitting there smiling at me?"
I could end this by admitting I wasn't Zoe. But then I'd have to explain why I'd come pretending to be her in the first place.
"I th-think there's been a m-mistake."
You know perfectly well who he is!
"No, Zoe. I understand perfectly."
Madison appeared.
"Everything okay?"
"Ask her," Bethany snapped.
"I d-don't know what she's talking about!"
My throat tightened.
There's been a m-mistake.
Another friend approached. Suddenly, everyone was staring at me.
I couldn't get the words out.
"I'm s-sorry. I have to g-go."
Bethany stepped aside. "Of course you do."
I hurried outside, trembling.
Everyone was staring at me.
My phone buzzed.
Zoe: Just got home. Work was a nightmare, and I'm exhausted. I can't make lunch! Rain check on our prank?
Me: I'm coming over. We need to talk. NOW.
At first, I thought Zoe had simply abandoned me in the middle of her stupid prank.
I was wrong. The truth was far worse.
I hurried outside, trembling.
***
Twenty minutes later, I was standing in Zoe's apartment.
She opened the door wearing pajamas. "Hey! Did they figure it out?"
"Do you know Bethany's boyfriend?"
Her smile vanished. "Who?"
"Bethany accused me of stealing him! She had a photograph of you two together!"
We need to talk. NOW.
"What? Sarah, I've never even met him!"
"She called me a boyfriend thief!"
"Bethany said that?"
"In front of everyone!"
Zoe stared. "Oh…Why didn't you tell them you were Sarah?"
Bethany accused me of stealing him!
"I tried! But I could barely get a sentence out."
"I'm so sorry. I never would've sent you there if I'd known."
I hesitated. "You really had no idea?"
"Sarah, I've never even met Bethany's boyfriend! I barely know anything about him."
"Then why was she so sure?"
I could barely get a sentence out.
"What exactly did she show you?"
"A photograph. Some man with a woman in a coat. I barely saw their faces."
Zoe frowned. "Then how does she know it was me? She could've mistaken someone else for me."
"Maybe."
But something about the whole thing still bothered me.
I barely know anything about him.
I opened my phone. "Is Bethany on Instagram?"
"Of course. Why?"
"I want to see something."
"Sarah, please don't start investigating my friends."
"I'm not investigating. I'm trying to understand why somebody thinks your face ruined her relationship."
I expected to find a clue about Bethany's accusation. I wasn't prepared for what I actually found.
Something about the whole thing still bothered me.
I pulled up Bethany's Instagram profile and scrolled through her photographs.
Then stopped.
In one picture, she was kissing a man on the cheek.
"Oh my God."
I wasn't prepared for what I actually found.
"What?" Zoe leaned closer.
"I think the pieces are finally falling into place."
"What pieces? Sarah, what are you talking about?"
"I can't explain yet. I need to check something first."
"You're scaring me."
I think the pieces are finally falling into place.
"Trust me, Zoe."
I began typing.
"Who are you messaging?"
"Someone who owes us an explanation."
"Can I help?"
I need to check something first.
"Not this time."
Zoe looked hurt.
"You always rescue me before I finish a sentence," I explained. "I need to handle this myself."
I had a plan.
But to make it work, I needed someone to walk into that restaurant without realizing who would be waiting for him.
Not this time.
***
The following evening, Zoe accompanied me to the restaurant.
"Why are we here?"
"Someone's coming. Sit here while I use the restroom."
"Sarah…"
"Trust me."
I had a plan.
I waited near the hallway.
Five minutes later, Ryan arrived and approached Zoe.
"I'm glad you agreed to meet me."
She frowned. "Do I know you?"
"Come on. Don't be like that."
Trust me.
"Who are you?"
I stepped forward. "Hi, Ryan."
He turned and froze, staring between us.
"What the hell?"
"I'm Sarah. This is my twin sister, Zoe."
Zoe stared at him. "Wait. This is Ryan?"
Don't be like that.
"Exactly."
He backed toward his chair. "What's going on?"
"Do you know Bethany?"
"She's my ex. We broke up ages ago."
Things were getting interesting.
And Ryan was about to learn why lying to two identical twins was a very bad idea.
This is my twin sister, Zoe.
Zoe leaned forward. "Then why did she accuse me of stealing you yesterday?"
Ryan frowned. "Who are you again?"
"Zoe!"
"Right. But I've never…"
"Exactly," I interrupted.
Things were getting interesting.
He turned toward me. "Sarah, what is this?"
"Actually," I said, "there's another person you should meet."
Bethany approached our table.
She stopped abruptly. "Oh my God."
Zoe folded her arms. "Hi, Bethany."
There's another person you should meet.
Bethany looked between us. "There's two of you?"
"Identical twins," I explained.
"Yesterday..."
"Yesterday, you were talking to me."
Bethany covered her mouth. "But you said…"
Identical twins.
"I barely said anything. I was confused, and you wouldn't let me explain."
Her cheeks reddened. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I tried. Then everybody surrounded me, and I panicked."
Ryan stood. "This is ridiculous."
"Sit down," Bethany said.
He slowly lowered himself.
I barely said anything.
I turned toward her. "Do you still have that photograph?"
She nodded.
"Show us."
She opened her phone.
The picture showed Ryan outside a café, standing close to a woman wearing a beige coat and carrying a brown handbag.
This is ridiculous.
Bethany pointed. "That's who I saw."
I turned toward Zoe. "Recognize the clothes?"
My sister frowned. "That's my coat."
Bethany nodded triumphantly. "See?"
"And my handbag," Zoe added.
Ryan stared at the table.
That's who I saw.
Zoe turned to Bethany.
"Why didn't you just call me when you saw that photo?"
"I was furious. I blocked you immediately. I didn't want to hear a single word from you."
"You could've at least asked me!"
"I know," Bethany admitted. "I should have."
I blocked you immediately.
I asked Bethany, "Are you absolutely certain the woman is Zoe?"
She examined the photograph.
Then looked between us. "I... I don't know anymore."
I turned toward Ryan. "Perhaps you can help. Who were you with that evening?"
He said nothing.
She examined the photograph.
"Ryan?"
"I don't remember."
Bethany stared. "You don't remember?"
"It was weeks ago!"
I folded my hands. "Funny. Because I remember perfectly."
Who were you with that evening?
Zoe looked at me. "Sarah?"
I took a slow breath. "That woman wasn't Zoe."
"Then who…"
"It was me. And the worst part was that Ryan knew exactly who I was the entire time."
Silence fell.
I remember perfectly.
Zoe stared at me. Ryan closed his eyes.
"Two weeks ago, I borrowed Zoe's coat and handbag for a date. I told Ryan they belonged to my twin sister."
"With him?" Zoe whispered.
I nodded.
"Ryan and I met through a dating app. His profile said he was single."
It was me.
"He was seeing you while telling me he wanted us back?"
"Yes. But our dates were terrible. He talked nonsense, so I stopped seeing him."
Zoe smirked. "Even cheating was something he couldn't do right."
But Ryan's terrible dating skills weren't the worst thing Bethany was about to discover.
His profile said he was single.
She turned toward Ryan. "When I showed you that photograph, why didn't you correct me?"
"You were screaming!"
"You told me Zoe had been flirting with you!"
He looked away. "Because you kept insisting it was her!"
"And you knew it wasn't," I said. "You knew I had a twin sister. I told you myself."
Our dates were terrible.
Bethany stared at him.
"So you let me blame Zoe?"
Ryan shrugged. "You'd already made up your mind."
"No," Bethany snapped. "You just found someone else to blame."
Ryan rubbed his face. "Beth, we'd practically broken up."
Zoe had been flirting with you!
"Then why were you begging me to give us another chance?"
He looked away.
"You could've told me the truth," Bethany said. "Instead, you let me humiliate my own friend."
"I didn't know how to fix it."
"You could've started by being honest."
You'd already made up your mind.
She placed her phone beside mine. "Look at these dates."
She showed us messages Ryan had sent her while he was dating me.
Ryan: I miss you ❤️
Ryan: Let's work things out.
Ryan: You're still the person I want…
I glanced at Ryan. "Wow. You really knew how to make every woman feel special. With the exact same lines."
You could've told me the truth.
He turned toward me. "You planned this whole thing?"
"I wanted Bethany to hear the truth."
"You could've just called me!"
"Would you have told her?"
He didn't answer.
You're still the person I want…
"Exactly."
His expression hardened. "You really think you're better than me?"
"I n-never said…"
"Then stop acting like it. You can barely get a sentence out!"
Zoe immediately leaned forward. "Don't you dare…"
I raised my hand.
I wanted Bethany to hear the truth.
She stopped.
For the first time in my life, my sister was ready to fight for me, and I was ready to ask her not to.
I looked directly at Ryan. "I m-might stutter when I'm nervous."
He rolled his eyes.
"But I know exactly what I want to say."
I paused.
You can barely get a sentence out!
He opened his mouth.
"I'm not finished."
He fell silent.
"You could have told the truth at any point. Instead, you let Bethany hate Zoe because it was easier than admitting what you did."
"Sarah…"
I was ready to ask her not to.
"No."
I took another breath.
"You didn't get exposed because I organized dinner. You got exposed because you lied to three women and expected none of us to compare notes."
Bethany slowly stood.
"We're done, Ryan."
"Beth, come on."
You could have told the truth at any point.
"No. Don't call me again."
He turned toward me. "Sarah, we can talk privately."
"We already did. Remember? You said you were single."
Zoe stood beside us. "Well, this has been educational."
Ryan looked between us. "So that's it? You're all leaving?"
You got exposed because you lied.
Bethany picked up her purse.
"Together, actually."
We headed for the exit.
"Seriously?" he called after us.
Zoe glanced back. "You should've tried being honest. Much less confusing."
This has been educational.
***
Outside, Bethany stopped us. "I'm sorry."
"For what, specifically?"
"For believing him. For accusing you. And for what I said yesterday."
She turned toward me.
"Sarah, I'm especially sorry I wouldn't let you speak."
I nodded.
You should've tried being honest.
"Thank you."
Bethany wiped her eyes.
"I feel ridiculous."
"Ryan should," Zoe said. "Not you."
I smiled. "And next time, maybe ask whether someone has an identical twin before declaring war."
Bethany laughed through her tears.
I'm especially sorry I wouldn't let you speak.
***
A few days later, Zoe invited me to another lunch.
This time, we arrived together.
Madison nearly dropped her drink. "Okay, that's genuinely terrifying."
Bethany grinned. "I'm checking everyone's identification from now on."
Zoe squeezed my hand beneath the table.
"I'm proud of you."
We arrived together.
"For organizing the world's most uncomfortable dinner?"
"For speaking up."
I smiled. "I was terrified."
"You didn't need me to rescue you this time."
"No," I said. "But I'm glad you were there."
"You didn't even let me finish defending you," Zoe said.
I'm proud of you.
"I know."
"You've changed."
I smiled. "I still stutter. I just don't let it stop me."
As we finished dessert, Zoe leaned closer. "So... another prank next weekend?"
I laughed. "Maybe next Saturday."
Bethany immediately raised her hand.
"Absolutely not. I'm bringing name tags."
