It wasn’t only Doja Cat’s look that stole people’s attention at the 2021 Grammy Awards last weekend. Her hairstyle, the “Soft-Serve Mullet” is the hair trend of spring. Mullet — the most controversial haircut from the 2000’s is making a comeback as the hairstyle of 2021.

From Lady Gaga’s meat dress, to Nicki Minaj’s wild leopard outfit look mixed with Marge Simpson’s hair, the Grammy Awards has had it all. This year Doja Cat won the award for the most outrageous look.

Created by Jared Henderson, a hairstylist based in LA — who proudly posted a picture of Doja on her Instagram account, shows the dark-chocolate brown shade in shag-like layers, short bangs, and longer strands beyond the shoulders.

Doja also drew attention to her jaw-dropping Roberto Cavalli dress, “like a motorcycle jacket that's fitted,” says the “Say So” singer and multiple Grammy nominees. The dress featured a plunging zipper that bared the front of her torso all the way down to her navel. "I want to be the cat lady so let me be that, you know, let me be that."

The long in the back, short on the top-and-sides haircut made its powerful comeback in spring 2020, during the pandemic. Joe Exotic (Tiger King) and Crystal Methyd (Ru Paul’s Drag Race) were responsible for this trend.

Celebrities including Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Cara Delevingne, and Maisie Williams have all adopted their mullet versions, making the search #mullet on Instagram summons more than 750,000 images and 1.6 billion views on TikTok for the same hashtag.

If you aren't sure about adopting a mullet haircut, the GQ magazine encourages us to give it a try, especially during the pandemic. “The slightly blunt cut and metallic dye job of Exotic’s leaves a lot to be desired, but seeing as you’re going to be at home for the foreseeable, why not give something new a go? You can always shave it off.”
