One of Hollywood's most recognizable faces has changed considerably since the days when he was a young actor on the verge of becoming a global sensation — but the story behind that transformation is even more fascinating.

Now, 2026 photos show the iconic actor at 75, offering a striking look at how much his appearance has changed since the early days of his career.

The actor at the center of this story was only 25 when a frightening accident interrupted his life in early 1977. At the time, he had already completed the leading role that would make him famous, but audiences had not yet seen the movie that would transform him into one of science fiction's biggest stars.

Before the World Knew His Face

He had finished filming Star Wars: A New Hope, but the film was still more than four months away from reaching theaters when the accident happened on Jan. 11, 1977. The account of his crash and its aftermath later became closely connected to one of the most enduring mysteries surrounding his Star Wars career.

Without the fame that was about to arrive, he was still a relatively unknown actor. He later recalled that he had accidentally ended up on the wrong freeway and was driving through an isolated area where there was little traffic.

During an interview, he estimated that he had been traveling between 65 and 70 mph and acknowledged that he had been going too fast. "And what happened, I think, was that I tried to negotiate an off-ramp and lost control, tumbled over, and went off the road. I fractured my nose and my cheek."

The crash left him with a fractured nose and cheekbone, serious facial injuries that required reconstructive treatment. According to the account, the actor's injuries included damage to his face that would later become part of the story surrounding his return to the Star Wars franchise.

The Accident Came at the Worst Possible Time

The physical injuries were only part of what troubled the young actor. He remembered being deeply upset when he saw how badly he had injured his face. "I was so upset to see how badly I had hurt myself," he said.

His nose required reconstructive treatment, including cartilage taken from his ear to repair it. But there was something else weighing heavily on him: he was supposed to be working.

He had been scheduled to travel to Death Valley the following day for additional Star Wars shots, and a crew was already waiting for him. "The real professional in me felt that I had let down all of those people," he explained.

That detail gives the accident an especially striking place in his story. He wasn't yet the universally recognizable star audiences would soon know; he was a young actor who had just landed an extraordinary role and was worried that an accident had disappointed the people counting on him.

Yet the production continued. Despite the crash and his injuries, Star Wars: A New Hope was completed, and when it finally arrived in theaters, the actor's career changed almost overnight.

The young man who had been recovering from a serious accident was suddenly Mark Hamill, the actor who became synonymous with Luke Skywalker after Star Wars: A New Hope.

Then Fame Changed His Personal Life, Too

The professional transformation was enormous, but his personal life was also beginning to change. Around the same period, he had met the woman who would eventually become his wife.

Marilou York was working as a dental hygienist in Westwood, California, when the two met at the dental office where she worked. According to PEOPLE's account of their relationship, the meeting happened in the mid-1970s, before Star Wars sent his career into another stratosphere.

Mark had gone to the office for dental work when he first noticed her. Marilou walked into the waiting room wearing jeans and her white coat, and he was immediately attracted to her. "I said, 'They let you dress like that at work?' She said, 'Yeah. Next,'" he recalled during a 1981 interview with PEOPLE.

Their first date was relatively ordinary for two people whose lives would eventually become anything but ordinary. They went to the movies to see Annie Hall. Later, they watched an early screening of Star Wars together, giving Marilou a front-row seat to the movie that would change her boyfriend's life.

During the screening, one small joke apparently told him plenty about her personality. "There was this one close-up of a minor character, curling his lips back from his teeth. [Marilou] leaned over to me and whispered, 'Bad caps,'" he told PEOPLE. It was the kind of detail that made their romance feel less like a Hollywood fairy tale and more like an unusually good first meeting.

Fame Almost Cost Him the Relationship

Their relationship, however, did not immediately become the lifelong partnership it would eventually be. When Star Wars became a phenomenon, the actor's world changed dramatically. He suddenly had fame, attention, and opportunities that had not existed before. The couple briefly broke up during that period. Looking back, he was candid about what happened.

"I had to taste groupies and fame," he explained. "I went to Las Vegas to date 38-year-old showgirls. That was exciting for about the first 10 minutes. Eventually, I wanted something to hold onto — and a family."

Marilou had her own life during their separation, but she apparently continued to believe there was something worth preserving. "I ran my own life. But all the time I thought I was good for him, so I was hoping we'd get back together." They eventually did. And this time, they built a life that would last for decades.

A 1978 Wedding Became the Beginning of a Family

The couple married in December 1978 at their home in Malibu, California, with a few friends present. It was a remarkably private beginning for a marriage involving one of the biggest stars in the world.

Their first child, Nathan, was born in 1979, just one year after the wedding. Their second son, Griffin, followed in 1983, and their daughter, Chelsea, was born in 1988.

Together, the couple built a family of five that remained notably removed from the most frantic side of Hollywood. That low-key lifestyle became part of their explanation for why their marriage endured. During a 2018 interview with Good Morning America, Marilou explained that the couple had deliberately stayed away from much of the Hollywood social scene.

"We've kind of been out of Hollywood," Marilou said. "We don't live in town, so we don't go in and do all the party circuits." She also believed the pauses between Star Wars films helped them create a normal family life. "It's kind of been nice that the [Star Wars] films did take a break because it gave us time to raise the family."

Their Children Eventually Joined the 'Star Wars' Story

The family's connection to the franchise did not end with their father's role. All three children later had brief cameos in the 2017 Star Wars film The Last Jedi.

The proud father celebrated the moment on Twitter, thanking director Rian Johnson for keeping his children's scenes in the finished movie.

"Thanks for not letting @nathanhamill @griffinhamil & @chelseahamill wind-up on #TheLastJedi cutting-room floor @rianjohnson! And for allowing my one directorial note: "Pop-up FASTER or Oscar'll block ya!" on the 2nd & final take. #MyKidsCoolCameoAsRebelScum," he wrote.

It was a playful family moment, but it also captured something important about the life he and Marilou had created. The children had grown up alongside one of the biggest franchises in movie history, yet their parents had managed to keep their family life at the center.

Nearly Five Decades Later, the Marriage Still Holds

As the couple approaches their 47th wedding anniversary this December, they have accumulated the kind of history most marriages could never fit into a single chapter. They married in 1978, raised three children, and spent decades living in the same Malibu community, building a family life that has endured through fame, career changes, and major upheavals.

Marilou has also become more involved in the business side of her husband's career. According to the information provided from her LinkedIn profile, she has served as CFO of his companies, Amazing Invisible Inc. and Hamjamill Inc., since 2014. She also sits on the board of directors at the University of Southern California, according to USC's board information.

And through all those years, the actor continued to publicly celebrate his wife. In February 2024, he shared a birthday tribute to Marilou on Instagram. "Marilou, you are my forever dream & are younger in spirit today than when I first met you. May you have the happiest of birthdays!" he wrote.

The following year, he marked their 46th wedding anniversary with another playful tribute. "On This Day in 1978: I married my dental hygienist, Marilou York," he wrote. "She cleaned my teeth & the rest ... is history."

Their Marriage Advice Is Surprisingly Simple

When PEOPLE spoke with the couple about their marriage, Marilou offered advice that sounded considerably less complicated than the decades of life they had navigated together.

"Don't sweat the little stuff." She also emphasized the importance of accepting a partner rather than trying to reshape that person. "And also, go in knowing you're not going to change anyone. So you have to accept their quirks and their behavior," Marilou said.

Her husband immediately responded with a joke. "What quirks?" The humor aside, he agreed with her larger point. He described marriage as being about "acceptance" as well as "communication."

"I just think that when you find the right one, the odds are against you," the Star Wars actor said. "But if you do get lucky, you just have to hang on and be grateful that you were able to find that one."

After almost five decades together, that philosophy seems to have served them well.

Then the Home They Built Was Put to the Test

The couple's story was also deeply tied to one particular place: Big Rock in Malibu. They had lived in the neighborhood since 1978, the same year they married. Their home was where they raised their three children and where much of their family life unfolded over nearly five decades.

"We got married there. We raised our kids there. It's a very, very special property," Marilou said. Then the Los Angeles wildfires arrived in January 2025. The couple reluctantly evacuated their Big Rock home as the fires moved through the area.

Marilou had been well-versed in fire safety and had spent time preparing for the possibility of a disaster, but she had originally intended to stay. "I had planned to stay, and I was really angry when we finally left that I didn't stay," she told PEOPLE.

After several days, however, her feelings changed. "After a few days, I think I thought, 'Well, I'm kind of glad I didn't.' Just because, I wasn't worried about dying. I was more worried and thankful that I didn't breathe all those toxins."

Before leaving, the couple activated their fire system, which draws water from their pool and sprays between "three to 500 gallons a minute over the whole property."

The system appears to have made a remarkable difference. "Nearly every home around us burned, but one," Marilou said. "And that home was probably saved by our fire system, the way the wind blew the water on their house from our fire system."

The Hamills' home was still standing after the fire. But surviving the flames did not mean the family could simply walk back through the front door. The property was not considered livable because of chemical contamination. "The house survived, but the downside is that it's toxic with chemicals," he explained in the PEOPLE interview about the documentary, Big Rock Burning.

More than seven months after the fires, the couple had still not returned to the property. They were considering their options, including homes in the Los Feliz area, but their preference remained to return to Big Rock. "I've looked at houses where we're living now in the Los Feliz area, but ideally, we want to go back because we got married there. We raised our kids there. It's a very, very special property," Marilou said.

The Fire Inspired a Documentary

The devastation eventually became the subject of Big Rock Burning, a documentary that the couple executive produced with their neighbor, director David Goldblum.

The film focuses on residents of Big Rock and their experiences during the fires. Its opening credits describe those residents as people who were “left to face the fires alone,” and the documentary includes footage showing the rubble left behind where homes once stood.

Much of the film focuses on residents' belief that local government was negligent in preparing for the disaster. They also describe what happened once the fires reached their neighborhood, saying there was no emergency response because the area was considered too dangerous.

In the days after the fire began, neighbors continued communicating through a community WhatsApp group. They shared updates about homes, exchanged information, and tried to find ways to help one another.

David eventually realized he needed to document what was happening. "The common thread that I kept hearing was, 'No help came for us. What happened? We did this all ourselves. We were fighting with garden hoses,'" David told PEOPLE. "And people just kept saying, 'We have to get our stories out there.'"

The documentary also captures the extraordinary lengths some residents went to in an effort to protect their homes.

The Couple Wanted the Film to Do More Than Tell Their Story

For Marilou, Big Rock Burning was not simply about looking backward. She hoped the documentary could help other communities prepare for disasters before they happen. "I'm just hoping that people can see it, and it does some good for maybe people planning, communities planning, for a disaster like that so we don't have the same terrible results," she said.

She acknowledged that the recovery would take time. "It's going to be a while before our neighborhood's back, and it's devastating. It's just really devastating. So I hope people get a chance to see it."

The film had an exclusive preview screening hosted by the Malibu Film Society and the City of Malibu on Aug. 29 at Malibu City Hall, followed by an Oscar-qualifying theatrical run from Sept. 12-18 at the Laemmle in Santa Monica.

The producing team includes Julie Parker Benello and James Costa, with Ricki Lake serving as an executive producer.

Even Their Dogs Have Become Part of the Family Story

For all the extraordinary events surrounding the family, some of their happiest moments remain remarkably ordinary. The Hamills are known as dog lovers and have three rescue dogs: Millie, Mabel and Molly. Molly became the newest member of the family. When introducing her on Instagram, the actor wrote:

"Say hello to the latest addition to the family," Hamill wrote on the post, which featured a carousel of images including Marilou cuddling with the pup. "She's the tiny (but fierce) ball of fur we call Molly Mae Hamill ❤️."

The family's dogs are affectionately referred to as the Hamill Furballs, and the family even has a Twitter account dedicated to them. It is another glimpse into the quieter life that existed behind the enormous celebrity attached to the actor's name.

And Now, Nearly 50 Years Later, His Face Tells Another Story

The actor is now 75. Nearly five decades have passed since audiences first saw him as the young Luke Skywalker. There have been changes in his career, his appearance, and his life. There was the 1977 crash and the facial injuries.

There was the sudden explosion of Star Wars fame. There was the brief breakup with Marilou before the couple found their way back to each other. There was their 1978 wedding, three children, and nearly five decades in the same Malibu community.

There was the house that became the center of their family story — and later survived a wildfire that destroyed so many surrounding homes. And now there are the 2026 photos.

The latest images offer a striking opportunity to look at the actor not simply as the young face from Star Wars, but as a 75-year-old man who has lived almost five decades in the public eye.

The transformation is unmistakable. Yet there are familiar traces of the actor audiences first met all those years ago. And perhaps that is what makes the latest photographs so nostalgic.
