Many people work in jobs that they hate for most of their lives simply because they can see no way out. They either need the money badly or cannot find the package they have anywhere else.

Whether you stay in a job out of comfort or necessity, you cannot be unhappy at work and expect to be happy in any other area of your life. You spend most of your life at work, so you need to ensure that you’re content.

If you’re having trouble leaving a job that you hate, here are some tips on how to do it.

Project

Project yourself five years into the future and see where you think that you should be. This will allow you to evaluate whether or not the job you are currently in will lead you to the place you want to be in 5 years.

Once you have done this, it will become more and more difficult for you to accept less than you are looking for, and you will eventually force yourself to resign so that you can get to where you want to be.

You might not be happy in your job at the moment, but wait it out a couple of weeks so that you can see if it is a temporary problem with an easy solution or if it is going to be a permanent issue that can never be solved.

Doing this will prevent you from making any rash decisions and allowing you to view things from a different perspective over time. You will have more time to try and figure out exactly what the problem is.

Notice

Once you have decided that it is time to leave this job, you should give your boss at least two weeks’ notice. Your contract with the company might require you to give more than two weeks’ notice, so be sure to check on that.

Giving notice is a decent thing because it will allow your company to find someone else to fill your position and find ways to substitute you with someone else while looking for a new candidate.

When you decide to leave a job, it is important to keep things neutral or positive, even if you leave because of a negative experience. This will ensure that you don’t burn any bridges or make a bad name for yourself.

Mention that you are leaving the company because you feel that you have learned everything you can from the position and explore other options. You can also say that you are leaving because you feel as though the company has given you everything you needed up until now, and now it is time for a change.

Before quitting your job, it is important to try and find another one. It is not wise to leave a job and have nothing else lined up. You should not stay out of the job market too long as gaps in your resume might lead to employers passing you over.

Try to begin looking for and applying to other jobs long before you quit your job so that you can have a small break and then get straight back into work. Doing this will also ensure that you don’t lose your mojo.

Goodbyes

It is extremely important to ensure that you say goodbye to your colleagues when you leave the job you are currently in. Leaving a job without saying the proper goodbyes will make it seem as though you have bad manners.

Saying goodbye to all of your colleagues will allow you to be well-liked and respected in the company and will once again reinforce that you are not burning any bridges.
