Mother Bought Her Son a Talking Parrot for His Birthday – Three Months Later, What It Repeated Made Her Question Her Marriage
October 14, 2026

After eight difficult years of marriage, I thought our vacation had given my wife and me a fresh start. Then a millionaire decided he wanted her. I never imagined his pursuit would turn our dream vacation into a nightmare.
"We need to speak with you. We have some news. May we come inside?"
The moment I saw the two officers outside my hotel room, I knew something terrible had happened.
"Did you find Jessica?" I asked. "Please, tell me where my wife is."
The older officer introduced himself as Kevin.
He waited until I sat down.
"I'm sorry, Mark. Your wife was involved in a boating accident."
"Is she in the hospital?"
He lowered his eyes.
"Jessica didn't survive."
For several seconds, I couldn't understand what he'd said.
Then I asked the question that had haunted me for two days.
"Was Richard with her?"
"Yes," Kevin answered. "He survived."
My wife was dead, and the millionaire who had been trying to steal her from me was alive.
I had no idea how much worse the truth would be.
My name is Mark, and Jessica and I had been married for eight years.
We hadn't always been unhappy.
For most of our marriage, she was my best friend. We laughed about everything, made plans, and could spend entire evenings talking.
But somewhere along the way, things changed.
We barely talked anymore. Every conversation seemed to turn into an argument, usually over something that shouldn't have mattered.
One evening, Jessica said, "I don't think we're happy together."
I wanted to disagree, but I couldn't.
Instead, I suggested taking a vacation.
"Maybe we just need some time away from everything," I told her.
We booked a week at a resort in Florida, hoping to reconnect.
Surprisingly, it worked.
We spent our days swimming, walking along the beach, and having dinner together. Without our usual responsibilities distracting us, we remembered how to enjoy each other's company.
One afternoon, a resort employee took our picture on the beach.
Jessica insisted on another because I'd been squinting.
"Why do you need so many pictures?" I teased.
"Because I want to remember us like this."
That evening, she held my hand across the dinner table.
"I missed us," she said.
"I did too."
For the first time in months, I believed our marriage might survive.
Then we met Richard.
He was an extremely wealthy businessman staying at our resort.
He had reportedly arrived on a private jet and owned several properties overseas.
We met him at the hotel bar.
Richard was charming at first.
He bought us drinks and spoke casually about places Jessica and I could only dream of visiting.
But within minutes, his attention shifted entirely toward my wife.
He complimented her appearance, asked what jewelry she liked, and suggested she visit one of his properties in Europe.
Jessica laughed awkwardly.
"That sounds lovely, but I'm here with my husband."
Richard smiled.
"Of course. I just think a woman like you deserves extraordinary experiences."
I didn't like his tone.
The next morning, someone delivered an expensive bottle of champagne to our room.
The card read, "For Jessica. Beautiful women deserve beautiful things. Richard."
Jessica shook her head.
"That's a bit too much."
I wanted to send it back, but she convinced me not to make a scene.
Later, Richard approached us near the pool and invited Jessica onto his yacht.
Not us. Jessica.
"I could show you the coastline," he told her.
"Thanks, but we're spending the day together," she replied.
Richard glanced at me.
"Naturally."
That evening, I finally lost my temper.
"He's obviously trying to get you into bed!"
"Mark, stop being ridiculous. I'm married!"
"Then why do you keep being so friendly with him?"
"Because I'm trying to be polite!"
"Tell him to leave you alone."
"I already turned down his invitation!"
We argued until neither of us was listening.
Finally, Jessica grabbed her purse.
"I need some space. I'm going downstairs."
It was around 9:30 p.m.
"Fine," I said.
She stood in the doorway, as though waiting for me to say something else.
I didn't.
Then she left.
That was the last time I saw my wife alive.
At first, I assumed Jessica would return after cooling down.
But an hour passed. Then another.
I called repeatedly.
Every call went unanswered.
By midnight, I was downstairs searching the bar, lobby, and outdoor seating areas.
The bartender recognized her.
"She was talking to that wealthy gentleman earlier," he told me.
"Richard?"
He nodded.
I searched the grounds and questioned the front desk, but nobody knew where they'd gone.
By morning, Richard had disappeared too.
His room was empty, and hotel staff said he'd checked out without warning us.
I contacted the police.
They searched for two days. Nobody could tell me where either of them had gone.
During those hours, fear gradually turned into suspicion.
Had Jessica willingly left with him?
Maybe she'd finally had enough of our marriage.
Maybe Richard had offered her a life I couldn't provide.
Then the officers came.
Kevin explained that a small motorboat was found overturned near a shallow stretch of coastline.
Richard had been rescued after reaching shore.
Jessica's body had been recovered later.
"Why were they together?" I demanded.
"We're still establishing the circumstances."
"Did Richard say anything?"
"He said they were returning to the resort when the accident happened."
"Returning from where?"
"A waterfront restaurant connected to the resort complex."
Jessica had never mentioned going there.
Kevin explained that Richard had been treated at a medical facility away from the resort.
He had arranged his hotel checkout before the accident.
That explained his disappearance.
It didn't explain my wife.
After the officers left, I sat staring at Jessica's suitcase.
Her sandals stood beside the dresser. Her favorite sweater hung over a chair.
Everything looked as though she might return.
Instead, I wondered whether she'd spent her final hours choosing another man.
The following afternoon, the police returned Jessica's recovered belongings.
Her purse and phone had been found among the items recovered from the boat.
I recognized the scratch on her phone case from when she'd dropped it in our kitchen.
There were dozens of missed calls from me.
But something else caught my attention.
Earlier that day, before she disappeared, Jessica had searched for the opening hours of a waterfront restaurant.
The same restaurant Kevin had mentioned.
Why had she looked it up before our argument?
I decided to find out.
The restaurant stood across a sheltered inlet from our hotel. A passenger launch normally carried guests between the two docks.
A hostess named Claire recognized Jessica's photograph.
"She came by that afternoon," Claire said.
"Was Richard with her?"
"No. She was alone."
"Why was she here?"
Claire hesitated.
"She wanted to arrange a special dinner for herself and her husband. She said their vacation had been wonderful, and she wanted to surprise him before they went home."
I gripped the counter.
"Did she make a reservation?"
"They discussed a few possibilities, but she hadn't confirmed anything."
Jessica had been planning another romantic evening with me.
While I worried about losing her, she'd been finding ways to bring us closer.
Claire continued.
"She came back later that night with a gentleman. They had a conversation near the terrace."
"Did they seem close?"
"Actually, she seemed upset."
Claire remembered hearing Jessica say, "My marriage isn't something you can buy."
I stared at her.
"She said that?"
Claire nodded.
The gentleman looked embarrassed. Other guests noticed.
"What happened next?"
"She said she wanted to go back to her husband. He offered her a ride."
Jessica hadn't gone there for a romantic evening.
She'd rejected Richard.
But why did she end up on his boat?
Back at the hotel, I found the bartender who'd spoken to me after Jessica disappeared.
His name was Owen.
When I told him Jessica had died, his expression changed.
"I'm so sorry. I had no idea."
I asked him to describe their conversation.
Owen explained that Jessica had come downstairs looking upset.
Richard approached her a few minutes later.
"She wasn't flirting," Owen said. "I remember her telling him she was married."
"Then why did they leave together?"
Richard apologized. He said he hadn't meant to cause trouble between you two.
He'd suggested speaking somewhere quieter at the waterfront restaurant.
Jessica initially refused, but Richard kept apologizing until she agreed.
Then Owen hesitated.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"I heard Richard talking to another guest the previous day. He was discussing your wife."
"What did he say?"
"He said you were lucky to have her. Then he joked that money could change a woman's mind about almost anything."
Owen looked uncomfortable.
"I thought he was showing off."
I thanked him and went outside.
Richard hadn't simply admired Jessica.
He'd decided that taking another man's wife would prove something about himself.
And my marriage had become his challenge.
A few days later, I learned that Richard had recovered enough to leave the medical facility.
Through the contact information he'd left at the resort, I arranged to meet him at his waterfront property.
He agreed after I made it clear I knew Jessica had rejected him.
Richard opened the door wearing an expensive shirt and looking exhausted.
"Mark," he said. "I'm sorry about your wife."
"Don't."
He stepped aside.
The house overlooked the water. Beautiful furniture filled the rooms, and enormous windows faced a private dock.
Richard had everything money could buy.
Jessica had only wanted another dinner with me.
"Tell me what happened," I said.
Richard explained that Jessica had accepted a ride back to the hotel.
"The resort launch wasn't operating anymore. I offered my boat."
"Why didn't you let your boatman take her?"
He looked surprised.
"How did you know about him?"
"I've been asking questions."
Richard sat down.
He admitted that a member of his crew had prepared the boat, but he'd insisted on operating it himself.
"It was a short trip. I knew those waters."
"Then why did you crash?"
"The conditions changed."
"That's all?"
He looked away.
"Jessica told you she wanted to come back to me, didn't she?"
Richard said nothing.
"She rejected you at the restaurant. Why couldn't you leave her alone?"
"I thought she was making a mistake."
"A mistake?"
"Your marriage was struggling. She told me that herself."
The familiar jealousy returned, but I forced myself to listen.
"I thought I could offer her something better," he continued.
"She didn't want it."
"I know that now."
"Then what happened on the boat?"
Richard stared through the window.
Finally, he spoke.
Jessica had asked him to take her directly to the hotel dock.
Instead, during the crossing, he continued talking about his properties, his travels, and the life they could have together.
She told him to stop.
He wouldn't listen.
The water grew rougher. Distracted by their argument, Richard steered toward a shallow area instead of following the marked route.
He failed to respond to the warning markers.
The boat struck a submerged obstruction in the shallow water and overturned.
Richard reached shore.
Jessica didn't.
He covered his face.
"I never meant for any of this to happen."
My voice shook.
"Why didn't you just take her back?"
Richard finally looked at me.
"I thought if I had a few more minutes with her, she'd change her mind."
Those few extra minutes had cost Jessica her life.
Richard began offering to help.
He wanted to cover funeral expenses and provide financial support.
"You think money can fix this?" I asked.
"No. That's not what I'm saying."
"You tried to buy my wife's attention. When she refused, you kept pushing. And now you're offering me money?"
He lowered his eyes.
"You can't buy your way out of what happened," I told him. "And you couldn't buy her either."
For once, Richard had nothing to say.
I left without accepting anything.
On the drive back, I thought about our last argument.
Jessica had told me she was married.
I'd treated those words as an excuse.
Richard had treated them as a challenge.
Neither of us had listened.
But I knew something important.
My jealousy had hurt Jessica, and I would always regret that.
It hadn't caused the accident.
Richard had made those choices.
When I returned home, Jessica's absence was unbearable.
Her coat still hung beside the door. Her books remained on the nightstand.
Friends and family helped arrange her funeral, but afterward, I was alone with my unanswered questions.
One evening, I opened Jessica's phone again.
I'd avoided reading her messages because it felt like I was invading her privacy.
But I needed to understand her final thoughts.
I found vacation photographs.
There were pictures of the beach, our dinners, and me laughing in the pool.
Then I noticed an unfinished message saved in her drafts.
It was addressed to me.
The timestamp was 9:47 p.m., shortly after she'd left our room.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
"Mark, I know things have been hard between us. I know we've both said things we didn't mean. But these last few days reminded me why I married you."
"I don't want a different life. I want us to figure out how to be happy in the life we already have. Can we talk when I come back upstairs?"
I read it three times.
Jessica hadn't been preparing to abandon our marriage.
She'd been preparing to return to it.
She wanted us to try again.
And I'd spent the first two days after her disappearance wondering whether she'd run away with Richard.
I remembered her standing in our hotel doorway, waiting for me to say something.
I could have asked her to stay.
I could have told her I loved her.
Instead, I'd said, "Fine."
I couldn't change that moment.
For a long time, I sat holding her phone, crying over the conversation we'd never have.
Several weeks later, I finally unpacked our vacation suitcase.
At the bottom, I found the printed photograph we'd taken on the beach.
Jessica was smiling, her head resting against my shoulder.
I remembered what she'd said.
"I want to remember us like this."
I'd assumed she meant the happiness we'd already found.
Now I understood she'd been holding on to the hope of what we could still become.
Our marriage hadn't been perfect. We had problems that a week in Florida couldn't erase.
But Jessica hadn't stopped loving me.
Richard had offered her expensive gifts, exotic trips, and a luxurious life.
She'd refused everything.
She'd wanted to come home to the man she'd married eight years earlier.
I framed our photograph and placed it beside our bed.
Sometimes I still replay our last argument. Sometimes I imagine what I'd say if I could have those final minutes again.
I'd tell Jessica I believed her.
I'd apologize for letting another man's attention make me question her love.
And I'd ask her to stay so we could have the conversation she wanted.
But none of that is possible now.
Richard tried to steal my wife because he believed everyone had a price.
He never understood that Jessica had already made her choice.
And I lost the woman I loved before I had the chance to understand how deeply she still loved me.
Could you forgive yourself for a bitter argument if it turned out to be your last conversation with someone you loved?
If you liked this story, here's another one for you: I was married for 48 years, and I thought I knew everything about my husband. After his death, his lawyer revealed he'd left his fortune to charity and a distant cousin. I was devastated. Then the lawyer handed me an envelope containing an address and a name I'd never heard before.
