Not to mention how many different types of bangs you can choose to get, it can all become a little confusing. However, there is a science to picking the perfect fringe to suit your face shape.

Determine Your Face Shape

Before deciding to cut bangs, it is important to figure out what shape face you have. Start by looking at yourself in the mirror and focus on your hairline, jawline, and face length.

“Does your hairline start more than four fingers away from your eyebrows? Awesome. This means you will have more options with how you style your bangs. Is your jawline oval-shaped? Baby bangs are an edgy trend that will compliment your features especially. Have a very long face? Opt for long, layered bangs for balance that’s also versatile,”

explains Courtney Goebel.

Once you figure out of your face shape, it's time to pick out the bangs that suit your face shape best. Here are some options to consider.

1. Heart-Shaped: Wispy Fringe Bangs

A heart-shaped face is known for its soft angles. Thus it is important to opt for bangs that are longer in length but not too wide.

The bangs should elongate from the forehead down and accentuate the curvature at the tip of your chin. Thus the best style to pick is a wispy, gypsy-inspired fringe.

2. Round-Shaped: Thick, Side-Swept Bangs

A round-shaped face has no angles and many people with this face shape think bangs will make it much worse. Goebel explains that this isn't the case.

“Say hello to thick-cut, side-swept bangs that extend mid-cheek. This type of bang adds an angular length to your hair and face, instead of accentuating the U-shaped curvature of your chin. They will also help elongate your jawline, giving extra definition to the hollows of your cheeks,”

explains Goebel.

3. Long-Shaped: Straight-Across Heavy Bangs

Long faces are designed to pull off bangs. Especially classic straight-across, heavy bangs as they help shorten the length and add width to the face to balance it out.

"Keeping the fringe line low right around your eyebrows is best,"

says Jon Reyman, hairstylist and founder of Spoke & Weal salons.

Square Face Shapes: A-Shaped Bangs

Bangs are perfect for creating an illusion. Square faces are wider at the cheeks and more angular around the jawline thus bangs will help soften their face.

"A soft A-shape works best for women with square faces. The tapered ends create angles, which help to soften your jawline and bring attention to your eyes,"

says Suave Professionals celebrity stylist Marcus Francis.
