South Korea has become known as the plastic surgery hub of the world. It boasts the highest number of cosmetic procedures per capita worldwide.
Many attribute the intense beauty standards in Korean society to the high numbers. Dr. Joo Kwon, the CEO of JK Plastic Surgery Center, one of the largest surgery clinics in South Korea and the only clinic officially accredited by the South Korean government, disputed this saying:
“Many patients are content with their appearance but have some small fixes or want to maintain their youthfulness. If someone feels as if a feature or an aspect of their appearance is interfering with their quality of life, surgery could assist in that manner.”
Here is a look at some of the small changes that are most popular amongst South Koreans:
1. Double Eyelid Surgery
One of the most common and popular procedures to have done in South Korea is double eyelid surgery. The procedure removes excess fat in the eyelid area to create the ideal double eyelid shape.
Aside from being popular in Korea, the procedure proves to be a hit worldwide. Nearly 15 percent of all plastic surgery procedures in the world are double eyelid surgeries.
2. Eye Widening Surgery

Rhinoplasty is better known as a nose job. The procedure involves straightening the nose bridge and raising it to look more pronounced.
This is particularly popular in Korea due to the cultural belief that the nose is one of the most prominent features in determining attractiveness. As a result, many Koreans idealize a high nose bridge.

Jaw reduction surgery is another extremely popular surgery in South Korea. This is because many Koreans yearn to have a slim chin that appears to create a “V-Line.”
The procedure involves shaving off part of the mandible to create a slimmer jawline. The surgery is so popular that one clinic in South Korea has even created a display from the shaved jaws.
