There are few things worse than not having anything to do and being bored out of your mind. This can often happen when the power goes out because we tend to use power for everything that keeps us occupied.

Sitting in the dark can be extremely frustrating, and we often have no idea what to do when the power goes out because we do not know what we can do that doesn’t require electricity of some kind.

Here are some things that you can do to keep yourself occupied when the power goes out.

Card Games

Card and board games are things that every family tends to do only in a log cabin in the middle of nowhere where there is no wifi, but they are an excellent way to spend the time when your power is off.

Playing card games with your family or friends is an excellent way to ensure that you spend some quality time with them and create or strengthen bonds that you have with them.

Nap

Okay, this isn’t technically an activity, but it is a sure way to pass the time relatively quickly, and hopefully, by the time you wake up, the power might be back on. You will also be able to nap properly because there will be no distractions.

Napping is one of the laziest ways to pass the time, but if you have nothing else to do and nothing else on this list appeals to you, then it might be your best bet.

Mad Libs has been around for many years, and it is not difficult to see why. It is a hilarious way to spend time with friends and family that requires no electricity or wifi connections, like so many of our pass times do these days.

Using Mad Libs to pass the time when the power is out is an excellent way to have some fun and enjoy the time spent with your family and friends. You will also have a lot of fun and a few good laughs.

If the power goes out in the middle of winter, you might be cold, and not being able to turn the heaters on will undoubtedly put you and your family in a foul mood, but there are ways around that.

If you have a fireplace when the power goes out, you can simply stoke your fireplace, and you will have the warmth and the light that a fireplace brings. Your home will feel super cozy as well, which is a bonus.

Read A Book

Reading books fall by the wayside all too often now thanks to technology, even the most avid readers tend not to read as much as they used to because technology has taken over our lives in such a big way.

When the power goes out, you have the perfect opportunity to read all of the books that you have been neglecting for the past few months. Grab a good book and read until the power comes back on.

Rearrange

You might have wanted to change the way your room or a few rooms in your house look. You have probably been avoiding it because you are too busy scrolling on your social media pages.

However, when the power goes out, it is the perfect time for you to begin rearranging the rooms that you want to change. There are no distractions, and you will have a lot of time to decide if you like how the rooms look.

Clean

Cleaning is something that many people put off for a long time, but when you have nothing else to do, cleaning might just be the one thing that you can do to pass the time while the power is out.

The bonus with this is that you will not only have something to do while the power is off, but by the time it comes back on, you will have a clean space in which you can carry out all of your activities that require power.

Letters

Letter-writing is a lost art form that many people just don’t do anymore. Why should we write letters when we can send texts or voice memos or memes related to the person we’re in contact with?

When the power goes off, one of the best things you can do is write letters. You can write them and post them, or you can write them and hand-deliver them to the person. Either way, it will be a special keepsake.

Remember in grade school when we didn’t have cell phones, and we had to find ways of entertaining ourselves, and the hangman was the most fun that we had ever had? Hangman is another excellent way to pass the time when your power is out.

Playing games that you played in grade school, whether they’re popular games or just games that you made up with your friends, will allow you to pass the time and bring a sense of nostalgia into your world for a while.

Be Creative

If you’re a creative person, it is easy to get bogged down by the things you see on social media and feel as if you cannot be as creative as you would like. When the power is out, though, you can truly tap into your creative energy.

You will have no distractions, and the time will be all yours to do with whatever you need to get your creative energies flowing again. It is the best time to do this because your world will be silent.
