Huawei is the second best-selling handset manufacturer on the market, so their next move only makes sense. The U.S announced a trade ban with the Chinese company, which has restricted the use of Android apps on the phones.

As a result, Huawei announced the rollout of the new operating system, which should be complete this year. Read further to discover more about Huawei’s new operating system that users can look forward to.

The Operating System Market

There are currently two dominating operating systems on the market, which are Android and Apple iOs. Google’s Android accounts for 85.4% of smartphones bought in 2019, and Apple iOs make up the remainder.

However, several others exist on the market but haven’t been able to make headway. These include Samsung’s Tizen, Microsoft’s Windows Phone, Amazon’s FireOs, and Canonical’s Ubuntu.

With this evidence available, many may wonder why Huawei has made this move. Unfortunately, the ban of Google services and Google Play stores in China has affected its handset sales, forcing them to switch.

About Harmony OS

Huawei representatives announced the company’s plan for a new operating system at a developer conference. At the conference, Huawei launched Harmony OS, which was pitched for the company’s devices.

The devices included in the pitch are the smartwatch, smart home gadgets, and Huawei smart TVs. Now, they have launched an improved version, called Harmony OS 2.0, which is also available on handsets.

The formal launch of Harmony OS 2.0 will be in October 2021, so Huawei phone users will wait until then. Huawei is also offering some of their phone models EMU 11; a mobile phone user interface based on Android 11.

How Harmony OS Will Work

Huawei developers intend for Harmony OS to work across all Huawei devices in the future. These devices include speakers, headsets, smartphones, laptops, smart home gadgets, and more.

This operating system approach is a model that has helped Apple find success in the market. Their current united systems approach can help the company create even more differentiated products in the future.

However, Harmony OS developers will have to face the challenge that has plagued many, which is re-coding apps. Fortunately, the company has revealed that they can easily re-code loved apps that are written in Android.
