Forget one-and-done lipstick swipes — the lip combo is having a real moment, and beauty fans can't get enough. It's a simple trick with endless room to experiment once you've got the basics down.

Lip combos have made a major comeback in recent years, and it's easy to see why. They're simple to master, and once you've got the hang of it, you can start playing with different color pairings and products.

A lip combo pairs a lip liner with a lipstick or gloss to create a polished, more defined look. The liner adds shape and structure, while the lipstick or gloss brings shine, dimension, hydration, and a fuller appearance.

The liner also helps lip color last longer and keeps gloss or lipstick from feathering. You can also opt for a clear gloss for a natural finish, or a tinted one for extra depth and vibrancy.

Skin undertone plays a bigger role than most people realize. Pairing complementary undertones creates a balanced, cohesive finish, while clashing ones can throw the whole look off.

To figure out your undertone, check your veins. Blue or purple veins usually mean cool undertones; green veins point to warm undertones; and a mix of both suggests a neutral undertone.

Once you've pinned down your undertone, picking the right liner and gloss gets much easier. Warm undertones tend to shine in shades with orange or brown bases, like caramel, peach, or coral.

Cool undertones look best in colors with blue or purple bases, such as blue-toned pinks, mauves, or plum. Neutral undertones have the most flexibility and can generally wear any shade, regardless of its undertone.

For anyone just starting out, here's a simple guide to your first lip combo. The technique may vary slightly depending on your products, but these core steps stay the same:

  1. Take your liner and trace the shape of your lips, starting with either the top or bottom lip.
  2. Once you've outlined your lips, thicken the liner with soft strokes to build the foundation for an ombré effect.
  3. Apply your chosen lipstick or gloss to the center of your lips, just over where the liner ends.
  4. Press your lips together to blend the liner into the lipstick or gloss.
  5. Finish up as needed — retouch the liner or add more product for extra pigmentation.

The beauty of the lip combo is how forgiving and customizable it is. Once the basic steps click, it's easy to build a whole rotation of combos tailored to different moods, outfits, hairstyles, and occasions.
