The birthday post offered a current glimpse of Robert and Natasha, whose family history is closely tied to Natalie Wood. But it was Natasha's appearance in the photo that quickly became a talking point among fans.

Robert Wagner's birthday tribute puts his relationship with Natasha back in view, while her own recent work has continued to preserve her mother's legacy for another generation.

Robert Wagner Marks Natasha's 56th Birthday

On September 29, 2026, Robert celebrated Natasha's birthday with a rare photograph on Instagram. The 96-year-old actor was pictured sitting beside her at a restaurant.

Natasha, who turned 56 that day, wore her dark hair in a bob with bangs and smiled toward the camera. Robert, dressed in a black shirt and black suit jacket, smiled beside her. The "Hart to Hart" actor accompanied the photograph with a personal birthday message.

The reference to Jill was to Robert's wife, actress Jill St. John, whom he married in 1990. The photograph itself, however, became the main attraction. As Page Six reported, Natasha's resemblance to her late mother, Natalie Wood, stood out in the new image.

Fans noticed it, too. "Happy Birthday Natasha. You look exactly like your mom," one person wrote. Another simply commented, "Looks just like her mother."

A third made a comparison to Wood's appearance in one of her famous films, writing, "She looks one Natalie her twin when she Played in Gypsy Rosalie, the Rosalyn Russell."

The Mother Behind the Comparisons

Natasha was born in Los Angeles on September 29, 1970, to Wood and British producer Richard Gregson. According to IMDb, her parents separated before she was a year old.

Wood had previously been married to Robert from 1957 until their divorce in 1962. The former couple reunited and married again in 1972. After that reunion, Robert became a father figure to Natasha and later legally adopted her.

Wood and Robert also had a daughter, Courtney, who was born in 1974. Robert has another daughter, Katie, from his second marriage to actress Marion Marshall.

The resemblance highlighted in the birthday comments is something Natasha has encountered for years. In a September 2026 Daily Mail interview, she recalled strangers approaching her when she was younger because they thought she looked like Wood.

"When I was younger, I would get stopped on the street by people who would say things like: 'You look so much like this actress, you've probably never heard of her, but her name was Natalie Wood.'"

Natasha said she often chose not to reveal the connection. "Most of the time I wouldn't admit I was her daughter, and just say: 'Oh, I hear that a lot!'"

She also wrote about their physical resemblance and close relationship in her 2020 memoir, "More Than Love: An Intimate Portrait of My Mother, Natalie Wood."

"We looked so much alike and had so much in common. Where did the mother end and the child begin? We were so completely connected - and she was so sharp and perceptive - that I sometimes believed she could see right into my mind," she wrote.

Natasha Was 11 When Natalie Wood Died

Wood's life ended in November 1981, when she was 43. Natasha was only 11. Wood had been aboard Robert's 58-foot yacht, Splendour, near California's Catalina Island. Robert, her "Brainstorm" co-star Christopher Walken, and skipper Dennis Davern were also on the trip.

Her death was initially ruled an accidental drowning. Decades later, questions surrounding the circumstances led authorities to revisit the case.

The investigation was reopened in 2011. Wood's death certificate was amended in 2012, changing the cause from drowning to "drowning and other undetermined factors."

In 2018, Detective Ralph Hernandez said Robert was considered a person of interest after investigators interviewed witnesses who said the couple had argued before Wood disappeared. Robert has repeatedly denied involvement in his wife's death.

By May 2022, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department had cleared him in its reopened investigation, according to Page Six. The case, however, was not declared solved.

"All leads in the Natalie Wood case have been exhausted, and the case remains an open, unsolved case," Lt. Hugo Reynaga said.

"If additional leads surface in the future, which have not already been investigated, the case will be reassigned to a detective to investigate the new leads," he added.

Natasha Has Publicly Stood by Robert

Years before Robert's latest birthday post, Natasha addressed the speculation surrounding her mother's death while making the documentary "Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind."

The documentary, which Natasha produced, sought to shift attention from the circumstances of Wood's death toward the actress's life, career, and identity beyond the tragedy.

In a HollywoodLife interview, Natasha said speaking to Robert about the allegations for the documentary was "Not at all" difficult. "It was something that he really wanted to do," she said.

Robert discussed the final trip to Catalina Island in the documentary. He said he and Walken had a heated conversation about Wood's career and her desire to work more before Wood went to the couple's bedroom.

Robert said that when he later went downstairs, Wood was gone. A search followed, and she was eventually found in the water wearing a jacket and nightgown. Natasha also directly addressed Robert during the documentary.

"It bothers me that anyone would ever think that you would be involved in what happened to her," she told him, "because you would have given your life for my mom."

Her memoir also addressed the relationship between Robert and Wood. As recounted by Refinery29, Natasha wrote, "My mother no longer has a voice of her own but I do and this is what I know - RJ [Wagner] loved Natalie 'more than love.'"

"No one in my world questioned my dad's love for my mom or his utter despair at her loss," she continued.

Two Fathers Stepped In After Wood's Death

Natasha has also spoken about what happened within the family after she lost her mother. Her biological father, Richard Gregson, and Robert both helped care for her. Gregson died in 2019 at age 89.

"Luckily I had these two men, Daddy Gregson and Daddy Wagner, who came together and rose to the occasion and completely put me first," Natasha told the Daily Mail. She said they immediately arranged therapy for her.

She continued seeing the same Beverly Hills therapist into her twenties. Natasha also spent summers in Wales with Gregson, her stepmother, and her younger sister, Poppy. She recalled learning ordinary household routines there, including cooking and doing laundry.

Robert has separately discussed the effect Wood's death had on him and the role his children played afterward. "When Natalie died, I thought my life was over," he wrote in his memoir, as quoted by Hello!.

"I thought I would never get up, you know?" Robert recalled. "My children helped me heal. And my friends were so supportive. And slowly, I was able to get up. I got on my feet, but it was very, very difficult and a sad time."

Natasha Followed Her Mother Into Hollywood

Natasha eventually built an acting career of her own. Her credits include "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Two Girls and a Guy," "Lost Highway," "Urban Legend," "High Fidelity," "Wonderland," and "Anesthesia."

Her television work includes "Pasadena," "The 4400," "Medium," "Cold Case," "ER," "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "House," "The Closer," and "Date My Dad." Her connection with Robert also reached the screen.

In 1995, Natasha appeared in one of the "Hart to Hart" television movies, which reunited Robert with his longtime co-star Stefanie Powers. Natasha married screenwriter and producer D. V. DeVincentis in 2003, and they later divorced.

She had daughter Clover Clementyne with actor Barry Watson in 2012, and the couple married in 2014. Clover's name carries another link to Wood: It was inspired by her grandmother's 1965 film "Inside Daisy Clover."

Natalie Wood's Legacy Reaches Her Granddaughter

Natasha has increasingly devoted part of her work to preserving her mother's legacy. She released "Natalie Wood: Reflections on a Legendary Life" in 2016. Her memoir "More Than Love" and the HBO documentary "Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind" followed in 2020.

Wood's career included "Miracle on 34th Street," "Rebel Without a Cause," "West Side Story," "Splendor in the Grass," and "Gypsy." She received three Academy Award nominations before turning 25. Natasha has also preserved memories of her mother through fragrance.

She first created a Natalie Wood-inspired fragrance in 2016, drawing from Wood's signature gardenia scent. Her fragrance project later developed into L'Amour Mere. On the brand's official website, Natasha explained that scent had remained closely connected with memories of her mother since childhood.

"As a child, I always knew my mom, Natalie Wood, was home because her scent arrived before she did," she wrote. After Wood's death, Natasha recalled spending time in her mother's bedroom and closet among her belongings.

"If I could somehow keep her fragrance alive, perhaps she would not be entirely gone," she wrote. The line now includes Natalie, a gardenia fragrance; C-Love, a rose-based scent whose name refers to Clover; and Lyublyu, inspired by the Russian phrase for "I love you" used by Natasha's grandmother.

Now Clover Is Part of the Family Story

The connection took another turn when Clover became the face of a fragrance campaign at age 13. Natasha told People in 2025 that putting her daughter in the campaign had not originally been planned.

"I think it's just my way of connecting my daughter to my mom," she said. The photos came about after Natasha took Clover to a New York trade show for L'Amour Mere. Photographer Jonathan Ressler suggested an informal shoot at their hotel.

Clover had brought along a Natalie Wood T-shirt featuring her grandmother's portrait. When she put it on, the photographer asked who was pictured on it. "Clover said, 'Oh, it's my grandma,'" Natasha recalled.

The photographer then photographed her in the shirt. There was no elaborate setup, makeup, or fancy lighting. Natasha said Clover has become increasingly curious about the grandmother she never met, including the scale of Wood's fame.

She has also begun watching her films. After Clover saw "Splendor in the Grass," Natasha said her daughter became interested in the range of Wood's performances.

Natasha Celebrated Robert Months Earlier

The affection seen in Robert's September birthday post was also visible when their roles were reversed earlier in the year. On February 10, Natasha marked Robert's 96th birthday with several photographs on Instagram.

"My dad is 96 today. I've been so lucky to have him by my side all these years," she wrote. "He is young at heart and older than I ever imagined he would be! Full of wisdom, love and good cheer. He's funny as hell and as good as they get."

Seven months later, Robert's photograph for Natasha's birthday brought the family back into public view. This time, one rare restaurant snapshot was enough to send viewers straight back to the face they remembered from some of Hollywood's most famous films.
