Crafted using a cost-effective base metal, such as brass or copper, gold filled jewelry goes through a mechanical process to envelop it with sheets of gold. The jewelry must contain at least 5% of gold to be classified as gold filled, making it much thicker than gold-plated accessories.

Meanwhile, gold vermeil comprises a sterling silver base with gold electroplated on top. To be classified as such, gold vermeil pieces must be plated with a minimum of 10k gold or a combined 14k and 24k gold. It should also have at least 1/1000th of a millimeter thick gold, and its sterling silver is made of 92.5 pure silver.

Gold filled and gold vermeil are both advantageous because of their affordability. However, between the two, gold vermeil jewelry is of higher quality. As opposed to gold filled, gold vermeil has a required thickness instead of a required composition, making it less prone to scratch marks appearing.

Similarly, it is best if gold vermeil does not come in contact with chemicals. Preserving it through regular and deep cleaning can also maintain its natural shine and quality.

Additionally, it is worth noting that gold vermeil specifically requires its base metal to be sterling silver, and in contrast, gold filled can be made from less expensive metals. However, gold filled is affordable and likely best for those unsure which jewelry to purchase.
