From knotted belts to bold, darker shades, a few simple tweaks can transform how this classic layer looks and feels. Here's what to keep in mind before reaching for yours this season.
It's one of the main staples of many cold-weather wardrobes, yet it can easily be worn year-round. The trench coat is among the most versatile building blocks of any outfit, pairing effortlessly with just about everything, from jeans and dresses to even sweats.

But how do you style such a timeless piece? According to Los Angeles stylist Katie Collins, a good starting point is choosing a length that complements your height. Finding a flattering cut is key so that you don't get swallowed up by the silhouette.
"A trench that hits mid-length — meaning knee-length — can work for most body types," Collins explained. "Mid-calf is also a length that works for most, but if you're petite, an above-the-knee style is ideal."
Once you've settled on a length that suits your proportions, it's time to start thinking about outfits. Here are a few tips to help guide you.

Most trench coats come with built-in belt buckles, but you don't always have to follow that design. "I'm a big believer in tying the belt in a knot in the front. It's so chic and effortless and also creates shape at the waist," Collins said.
In some cases, using the buckle at the front can actually create extra bulk. If you'd rather leave it open, don't let the belt simply hang at your sides. "My advice is to tie a loose knot in the back to give the coat more shape," Collins added.
Trench coats most commonly come in beige, khaki, or camel, but it's worth investing in a darker piece as well. Think navy, black, or even burgundy, whichever shade strikes your fancy. The fun part about a darker trench coat is how easily it transitions from a daytime look to something more evening-appropriate.
By day, try wearing it closed over a chunky knit, tailored trousers and loafers. When evening arrives, throw it over a silky slip dress and strappy heels, or a sleek turtleneck with leather pants and pointed-toe boots. Either way, the darker shade keeps the look polished from day to night.
When it comes to wearing dresses with a trench, Collins follows one simple rule. "The dress should either be shorter than the trench or a longer style like a maxi," she said. You don't want it to land right at the hem, where it risks peeking out just a smidge and creating an unflattering apron-like effect.
The same principle applies to skirts and trousers. Proportions matter, too, as Collins notes that a bodycon or fitted dress looks great with an open trench.
While trench coats obviously work well with jeans and trousers, Collins said she still prefers to pair hers with bare legs or dark tights, which instantly makes the whole outfit look more elegant and elevated.
With the right length, a cleverly tied belt and a few smart pairings, the trench coat can carry you from crisp fall mornings to mild spring evenings. Whether you opt for a classic camel or a moody burgundy, Collins's tips prove that this wardrobe hero is far more versatile than it might first appear.
